I did not know Laura.  There are no pictures of me with Laura when she was alive.  I never talked to Laura on the phone when she was undergoing chemo.  In fact, I have never met Laura…but her story of grace, love and endurance strike a deep chord from within.   She has inspired me to do something great.  Something bigger than myself. Something for a cause that hits close to home for all of us.

Everyday I get up and swim, bike or run.  Everyday I drive to work in my car, invariably getting irritated at the driver going too slow in front of me.  Everyday I get to experience happiness and sadness, love and pain, success and failure…I do this not because I deserve it, but because it was given to me.  But what I fail to do everyday is celebrate the fact that I allowed to do these things.

And that’s what Maintaining the Legacy is about: giving something that you have so that others might be inspired.   Imagine what would happen if we all gave something, no matter out seemingly insignificant, for a cause bigger than ourselves.

Everyone has their Laura–someone we know and love who has embarked on the challenging battle against cancer.   In fact, I can think of several.   Maintaining the Legacy is a chance to help our loved ones in this fight by coming together and using our gifts of endurance, protesting that no matter how hard cancer strikes, it cannot take what lies within us: our ability to overcome and endure.

Below I have outlined my demonstration of endurance.  But the truth is I can only do so much.  We need your help.  And I’m not talking donations.  Although those are great, I am talking about getting out and DOING something that you feel passionate about; to help someone or something bigger than yourself.

Specifically, I ask you to come to join Team Laura at the Head for the Cure 5k on August 28th. If I can run a 10k, bike 400+ miles across Kansas and get off my bike and run a 5k…if Laura and so many others can undergo the rigors of chemo treatment for years without any finish line in sight…then you can come out and walk, jog or run a 5k.  It will take no more than 45 minutes of your life and the payoff could be life-changing.  It was for me…I’m about to embark on something I never imagined.

Please join me at Head for the Cure and sign up to be a part of “Laura’s Legacy”.  If you would like updates, to ride with me during any segment of the event or would like to be a part of “Laura’s Legacy”, please click here.   And finally, if you would like to make a donation to our event, please click here.  Whatever you do, please do something…I will need all the help I can get to Maintain the Legacy!

OVERVIEW:

From August 25th – August 28th I will run a 10k, bike over 400 miles to Kansas City and then run the Head for the Cure 5k, all in effort to raise awareness for brain cancer.   During this time I will be stopping in Great BendManhattanOverland Park and with a final stop in Corporate Woods where I will get off my bike and run the 5k.   The exact route is loaded here.    At each stop I plan to do a specific awareness activity in order to bring more attention to how we all can do something extraordinary if we believe we can.  This will truly be a journey of “Endurance inspired by hope” (1 Thessalonians 1:3).  I look forward to seeing you somewhere along the way!
